TransAlta, Spray Lakes Hydro

Spray Lakes is a small, two-unit hydro plant owned by TransAlta. It’s located just south of Canmore, Alberta and is nestled right in the Rocky Mountains. They were completely overhauling the second unit and they requested our services to machine the face and bore of their 10’ stay ring flanges. This was a uniquely challenging job as they required that every surface we machine be within .005” over the entire length of the flange. In portable machining this is an extremely difficult tolerance to hit, especially at this diameter. If you look at the pictures you can see that we had to secure our flange facer under the flange on the cement walls below. You can also see that we used 8”x8” dunnage to give additional support to our legs, which allowed us to adjust the machine to hit the necessary tolerance.
